The Changing World of Print Buying

A new generation of print buyers are changing the industry as we know it. They are demanding shorter lead times and are only prepared to pay for copies printed.

A new generation of print buyers is emerging in the industry with a simple business philosophy; “first copy sold”. This philosophy concerns the buyers interests in only paying for itemised print copies rather than additional print running costs. This change in demand is being driven by the new generation who purchase print like they purchase grocery items from Coles or Woolworths. The new print buyers are impulsive when buying print from digital toner based print engines and grand format inkjet printers.

This new generation is joining the print industry from the web design market with no colour qualifications or specific technical knowledge.  This changing trend is highlighted by the latest Adobe Suite C5 software which adopts a web rather than print based mentality.

Offset printers are unable to meet the needs of this new generation of buyers as they are unable to achieve the philosophy of first copy sold. Offset printers have to charge a full print package price which includes plates, make-ready times and sheet costs whereas digital printers are able to charge a simple per copy price and are able to sell their first print copy.

Innovative technologies already exist for offset printers to be able to transform their capabilities. They are being used by the big four press manufacturers with make-ready times of under five minutes for the chance to meet the buying philosophy “first copy sold”.

ColourProcess can assist in ensuring printers are able to meet the needs of this new print buyers generation. There are a variety of products and software solutions available from ColourProcess which can improve existing technologies by creating a more efficient and streamlined printing process.
